One of a number of proverbial sayings published by Kuno Meyer in ZCP vi.260. A proverb used in the 17th century satire “Pairlement Chloinne Tomáis” substitutes “bail” (Old Irish “bal”) for “sobarthan”:

Is fearr bail ná iomud.
